Aston and Ghent set for big year

1:30pm Thursday 9th February 2012

THE year may only be a month old but Ryan Aston and Tommy Ghent aren’t hanging around.

Dudley’s highly-rated duo both return to action in front of the Sky Sports cameras this Saturday as Prizefighter comes to Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall.

The ‘Prizefighter Prospect’ bouts take place before the eight-man tournament and represent a homecoming for the unbeaten pair, who are both signed to Matchroom and have fought around the country in their early professional careers.

Middleweight Aston, with four wins in the pro ranks, takes on Telford’s Keiron Gray and already has another fight pencilled in for March 17 in Sheffield.

He said: “By the end of the year I want to have some sort of title and be ranked in the top 20.

“Every fight I feel I am improving and I’m starting to show a bit more of my potential.

“I still use my feet for everything. It’s just been a case of slowing down the shots and making sure the power is there.”

The six-rounder will be Gray’s first fight since coming out of retirement and is also a step up in weight. He had hung up his gloves after drawing with Dudley’s Jamie Ball when they clashed for the Midland light-middleweight crown in December 2010.

Aston has never seen Gray fight but believes he will be able to deal with anything his opponent throws at him.

He said: “I’ve been told he is a come forward fighter and that is what I have been working on.

“He has taken the fight and let’s see what happens.

“I’m not predicting anything for the fight but I am very confident.

“It’s going to be nice to be in front of a home crowd and the show is a sell-out so there should be a great atmopshere.”

And Ghent, whose opening two fights as a professional have seen him win both inside the distance, will be facing Walsall’s Joel Ryan.

Ryan, a winner of four of his six fights, is coming off a loss in his last contest when he was outpointed by Chris Evangelou in November.
