Mahazi takes points win on tough night for Warley

12:54am Saturday 4th February 2012

PROMISING amateur Naser Mahazi earned an impressive win at Warley Boxing Club’s latest show.

Mahazi took a unanimous decision against Cwmbran club’s Sam Janes at Old Hill Plaza last night (Friday), on what was otherwise a disappointing night for the home fighters.

The 15-year-old was the only one of six Warley men to take a win and was certainly given enough to think about in the early stages by his Welsh opponent.

But Mahazi gradually worked his way into a commanding position, with a left over the top which caught Janes flush the most eye-catching shot of the second round. He continued to land the better shots during the third to take victory.

There were narrow defeats for Warley youngsters Jara Shokker and Harvey Walker, while Shoaib Munsaf simply found himself out-classed by Nuneaton ABC’s Shane Porter in a bout which was stopped in the third.

Perhaps the unluckiest fighter was Warley’sDanny Conlon, who came out the wrong side of a very close decision with Birmingham Irish ABC’s Kieran Hodson.

In one of the most entertaining scraps of the evening, Hodson came out swinging and had Conlon on the back foot before the Warley man began to gain a foothold in the contest.

Conlon landed some very good shots at the end of rounds one and two but could not slow his opponent down. In the end two big right hooks in the final round probably did enough to sway the judges in Hodson’s way, who took a unanimous decision.

Studio ABC’s Otis Treasure looked impressive in his first outing over three rounds as he defeated Wye’s Lee Jenkins. Warley’s Mat Windle lost a close contest to Triumph ABC’s Jordan Cooke.

The most disappointing contest of the night was the Birmingham 71kg Belt Challenge between Bartley Green’s Cornelius Ramaphala and Eastside’s Carl Wiggins.

Despite a promising opening, the fight descended into a scrappy affair, with the referee the most prominent figure in a staccato third round as both men fouled persistenly.

Ramaphala eventually edged the decision on the scorecards and celebrated by falling to his knees but it is difficult to believe either man will be satisfied with their performance.
